IBM OpenAI Partnership Adds a Dedicated Consulting Practice

What the IBM OpenAI partnership actually covers
The two companies will jointly market and build industry solutions for financial services, government, telecom, and retail.
IBM Consulting is standing up a dedicated OpenAI practice. Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, told TechCrunch that training and certification will cover tens of thousands of consultants, primarily by retraining people already on staff, over the next several months.
The training list is Codex, the API, cybersecurity, and consultative solution credentials. IBM will also create specialized Forward Deployed Experts through OpenAI's Partner Network.
Those are delivery muscles, not a new model card. The commercial object is to put OpenAI inside IBM-shaped industry work, with IBM people who can speak Codex and the API in the same sentence as a client process.
OpenAI has been collecting systems integrators. This IBM OpenAI pact is another one. It does not, on the disclosed facts, replace IBM's other model relationships.
Training, GPT-5.6, and a model-agnostic stack
IBM said it will integrate GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work into IBM Consulting Advantage, the AI platform it uses for consultants, so clients can put AI on core operations.
IBM is still presenting itself as model-agnostic. Granite and watsonx remain in that story. The OpenAI practice sits beside them, not on top of a statement that Granite is retired. Do not write a skill that assumes IBM accounts now have a single default model.
GPT-5.6 in Consulting Advantage is a routing change for IBM's own consultants. It is not a public price cut, a new API SKU, or a claim about OpenAI slowing Astra training. Keep those threads separate.
The same caution applies to safety packaging. Private safety processing and zero-data-retention is an OpenAI product track. This partnership announcement does not say whether Consulting Advantage inherits that mode. If a client needs it, ask. Do not infer it from the press line.
IBM also already works with OpenAI on cybersecurity. In June the two joined the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. The new deal also integrates with IBM Autonomous Security. That is an expansion of an existing cyber thread, not the first contact.
A skill prompt for an IBM-led engagement should name the model family in use — GPT-5.6, Codex, ChatGPT Work, Granite, or something else — instead of saying "IBM's AI." The partnership makes that field more important, not less.
Why this deal lands now
IBM lowered its 2026 revenue forecast last month. CEO Arvind Krishna has said AI complements rather than replaces demand for IBM mainframes. The OpenAI practice is part of that growth story: more frontier models on the consulting menu, without a public claim that mainframe work is going away.
Terms were not disclosed. There is no figure here for the size of the contract, the split of revenue, or how many seats IBM will buy. Tens of thousands of consultants is the staffing number, and it is a retraining number, not a hiring number.
